My Sunday morning started out as routine. Then I heard a loud pop—and the bathroom went dark.

Just like that, we lost power in two bathrooms, the bedroom, and part of the kitchen. The rest of the house? Still working fine.

My husband checked the 1961 fuse box, but there was no obvious fix. So we did what most people do when the problem isn’t clear: we called an electrician.

The first one we tried? Out of business.

Eventually, we found someone new who could come out in a few days.

In the meantime, we adapted.

Lanterns became our light source. I read by flashlight that night. As a result of our situation, I gained a new appreciation for something I usually take for granted—electricity.

What This Has to Do with A/E/C Firms

That’s exactly how many Architecture/Engineering/Construction projects unfold.

Everything starts according to plan…until it doesn’t.

  • Site conditions aren’t what you expected
  • Regulations change midstream
  • Materials become unavailable
  • Something breaks, shifts, or delays

And suddenly, the team must pivot.

The firms that stand out aren’t the ones that avoid every problem.

They’re the ones that solve problems effectively—and can prove it.

Turn Challenges into Marketing Assets

Here’s a simple but often overlooked idea: ask your project managers to document challenges as they happen in real time in a quick Teams note, voice memo, or email to marketing.

Not long reports; just a few lines:

  • What went wrong?
  • How did you solve it?
  • What was the outcome for the client? (Did it save time, reduce costs, avoid delays, or improve performance?)

Over time, you’ll build a library of real-world problem-solving stories.

And those stories are gold because they show how your team performs when things don’t go as planned.

Because chances are, your next prospect wants to know whether your firm can handle unexpected challenges seamlessly.

Why This Matters

When marketing to A/E/C prospects who need technical help for large and often complex projects, claims aren’t enough.

Saying “we’re problem solvers” is easy.

Showing how you solved a real problem? That’s what builds credibility and helps you stand out in proposals and interviews that can often sound alike.

For now, lantern light will guide us until the electrician restores power.

But the experience is a reminder: unexpected challenges happen—to homeowners and to project teams alike.

Build Your Story Library

If you’re not capturing and telling these stories, you’re leaving some of your most persuasive social proof on the table.

I help A/E/C firms turn real project challenges into clear, compelling stories so your proposals, interviews, and website content prove your ability to successfully deal with challenges.
