We often hear familiar gobbles and clucks outside our Billings, Montana, home. I glance out the window and frequently say, “The turkeys are here.”
A quick look reveals as many as 15 turkeys hanging out in the neighborhood. We’ve become used to them.
At this time of year, the males put on elaborate displays—puffing up, fanning their tails, even squaring off with each other to impress the hens. We enjoy the show, but it no longer surprises us.
But for motorists and pedestrians going by? They stop and stare. They grab their phones and snap photos. For them, the sight is unexpected and unusual.
It’s a reminder: what feels familiar to us can be fascinating—or completely unknown—to someone else.
That’s also true for A/E/C companies.
Publicize Your Services
You might assume your clients know what your firm offers. But if they hired you for environmental engineering, do they also realize you have in-house planners and architects?
And what about your employees? New hires likely receive a broad overview of your services, but seasoned professionals often stay focused on their specialties. Is your workforce aware of the breadth of your firm’s services?
Would they know when and how to refer a client or prospect to another department?
Tell Stories to Inform Stakeholders
That’s where intentional, consistent storytelling makes a difference—helping employees and clients understand the bigger picture. Here are a few ways to do that effectively:
🔹 Share project stories that showcase your full capabilities
🔹 Highlight employee expertise across disciplines
🔹 Feature cross-disciplinary collaboration in proposals or internal newsletters
Don’t assume your capabilities are obvious. What’s familiar to you might be eye-opening to someone else.
The male turkeys in our neighborhood put on a beautiful display to attract attention. Like those turkeys, your firm also needs to stay visible. There’s always someone new who could become your next client.
